With PoWiFi, the routers send out a constant 1W signal instead of the irregular power currently used. This signal is then captured and turned into DC power by harvesters. Thus, the idea behind PoWiFi is to embed small computing sensors in everyday objects like cell phone, washing machines, air conditioners and more, thereby using those sensors to harvest Wi-Fi signals and power the devices.
An initial challenge faced by the team during the development of the system was — how to charge low-power sensors without plugging them to a power source? While looking for a solution they found that the peak energy available in untapped Wi-Fi signals is close to what is required to operate some low-power devices.
To put things into perspective, Computer World calculates that the electricity generated this way is , times too low even to run a smartphone, without giving a thought to charging.

Typically, technology like this would seem implausible because of issues like the loss of signal fidelity over the transmission through the air then through a series of mediating technologies. Kushnir tells New Atlas :. Most of the loss is on the transmitting side.
Those are at the moment limited to around percent efficiency. Kushnir says the distance and power load will, at first, be fairly low—sending a few kilowatts over shorter distances within New Zealand.
But, he says, the hypothetical limit for distance and power load will scale up to almost unfathomable amounts. All Emrod has to do is make bigger rectennas.
