Mary Easty: Hanged as a Witch in Salem, Tituba and The Salem Witch Trials of George Burroughs and the Salem Witch Trials. Profile of Mary Lacey Sr. History of Witches Signing the Devil's Book. Although the child of six years was eventually released on bond, she was psychologically damaged for the rest of her life.
Good's infant died in prison with her before Good was hanged. Her execution occurred on Tuesday July 19, According to local tradition, when Good stood at the gallows prepared to die she was asked once more by Rev. Nicholas Noyes, assistant minister in the Salem church, to confess and thus save her immortal soul. Far from confessing, Good is said to have screamed, "You're a liar! I'm no more a witch than you are a wizard!
If you take my life away, God will give you blood to drink! The way in which Good has been portrayed in literature is worth mentioning because it sheds light upon how the Salem Witch Trials have been popularly imagined and how the accused witches were and are viewed today.
Good is always depicted as an old hag with white hair and wrinkled skin. She is often said to be sixty or seventy years of age by the same writers who clearly state that she was pregnant and had a six-year-old daughter. Even accounts from Salem Villagers and magistrates at the time refer to her as an old nuisance, hag, and bed-ridden.
It was then apparent that the girl had picked up the point which he threw and put it in the bosom of her dress, whence she drew it to corroborate her statement that someone had stabbed her. Good never confessed to being a witch but, according to court records, she did break down during her examination by Judge John Hathorne and accused Sarah Osbourne of tormenting the girls, possibly to divert attention from herself:.
Why do you not tell us the truth? Why do you thus torment these poor children? I scorn it. You bring others here and now you charge me with it. Good was ultimately convicted but her execution was pushed back until the birth of her child. Good replied:. I am no more a witch than you are a wizard, and if you take away my life God will give you blood to drink!
The five women were hanged and most likely buried near the execution site because convicted witches were not allowed to be buried in consecrated ground. Twenty-five years later, in , Reverend Noyes suffered an internal hemorrhage and died choking on his own blood.
The young accusers agreed. In the end, however, Good was convicted of witchcraft and sentenced to death. On July 29 , , Sarah Good was hanged along with four other women convicted of witchcraft. While the other four quietly awaited execution, Good firmly proclaimed her innocence. The Rev. Nicholas Noyes was persistent, but unsuccessful, in his attempts to force Good to confess.
When she was found guilty by the judges, including Noyes, according to legend she yelled to him: "I'm no more a witch than you are a wizard, and if you take away my life God will give you blood to drink", although this sentence does not appear in any of contemporary reports of the execution.
There is also a legend that, twenty-five years later, Noyes died from choking on his own blood. Good was pregnant at the time of her arrest and gave birth to an infant in her cell in the jail in Ipswich. The infant died before her mother was hanged. In , William Good successfully sued the Great and General Court for health and mental damages done to Sarah and Dorcas, ultimately receiving thirty pounds sterling, one of the largest sums granted to the families of the witchcraft victims.
