Microsoft vista this copy of windows is not genuine

It has been running fine until yesterday when upon a reboot I was prompted to "Reactivate" my copy of Vista. I can still log in, however the desktop is not black and most of the Vista functions are not available.

Upon login a small note appears in the lower right hand of the screen that states "Windows Vista TM Build This copy of Windows is not genuine". Trying to reenter the Product Key from the sticker on the bottom of teh laptop does not work. Dell customer support says it caused by a virus, but wants to charge me to resolve the issue blah! Any ideas?

I got as far as activation and I'm being asked to enter a product key or run windows setup. When I enter the key it says it is not the right one. Any advice please? I change the product key code to the COA label. When I get to the activation page it informs me that "the product key that you typed is already in use. Everytime I go back to entering a new product key I see that the existing one shown is not the one I entered. Thank you so much for your help. Activation is successful although it didn't happen the way you described.

The SLUI4 couldn't be found. I notice that the product key code in system properties is not the number on the COA label. Should that be a concern? I have the same sort of problem.

My 4 year old Toshiba laptop with Vista just started saying i do not have a genuine copy of Windows.

I ran the diagnostic and got the report below. I tried to re-enter the product key from the System tab but it says teh key will not work with this version of Vista and to reun Vista setup or ener the proper code.

I have done this twice. Forgot to add: on the System page it says click on this to activate Windows. When I do it says I must be re-installed to activate. I have the same problem. I have a message in the lower right corner of the Vista desktop that says the software is not genuine.
