Seven Transition to Teaching programs in special education are currently available across Indiana. For individuals who have not yet passed the state licensing exam : Individuals who have completed a special education preparation program but have not yet passed the state licensure exam can participate in a free test-preparation workshop. By transitioning to the new test program early, IDOE is working to provide greater convenience for prospective teachers—allowing them the option to use either test during this transition period.

Substitute Permit Requirements Individuals applying for Substitute Permits must: Hold a high school diploma or high school equivalency certificate; Be 18 years of age or older; and Meet the requirements set forth in the screening process of the school employer.
Applicants: Please contact the school employer for which you want to work for more information. Application Process Each school employer will recommend individuals for Substitute Permits through the application process. The Substitute Permit is valid only for the requesting school employer unless the school employer has a reciprocity agreement for use of substitute teachers with another school employer.
