Truck driving is a critical part of both the mining sector and retail sector in Western Australia. Daily, these sectors are reliant on truck drivers to transport their goods, safely to their many clients on time. It is a career built on flexibility, security as well as being well known for having excellent remuneration and benefits. At Miro Driving Academy, you can do individual lessons 7 days a week or a one-day course.
The one-day course is intensive, one-on-one training with the instructor and your assessment is at the end of the day. For our truck driving applicants, we can cater our times to those students who are already working full time and are waiting to upgrade their licence.

Heavy Rigid HR class heavy vehicle licences allow you to drive heavy vehicles with three or more axles and a gross vehicle mass greater than 8, kg. You will also be allowed to tow a trailer with a maximum GVM of 9, kg. A learner's permit is not required; however, you must be accompanied by a supervisor who is either:. If you meet the eligibility criterion and pass an eye test, you can train for a HR licence with an authorised RTO.
If you choose to do so you will be required to complete the following training modules applicable to the HR class of licence you require:. A processing fee is charged for this service. As a learner driver, you must also display 'L' plates and comply with any other conditions as required. Please note that prior to undertaking any instruction in a HR you will need to ensure that you meet the commercial vehicle medical standards for driving as outlined in Assessing Fitness to Drive national medical standards for licensing and clinical management guidelines an Austroads publication.
If you meet the above eligibility criteria, you can apply to upgrade your licence to an HR class. Please go to Proof of identity for more information. Applications for a Western Australian driver's licence must be submitted in person at a Driver and Vehicle Services centre. The eyesight test will be conducted at the Driver and Vehicle Services centre when you make applications for your licence or at the Registered Training Organisation RTO if you choose to be trained and assessed via the RTO.
If you need to wear visual aids to pass the eyesight test, your licence will be endorsed to show that you must wear those aids when driving. Applicants are required to declare any permanent, long-term mental or physical condition which may include a dependence on drugs or alcohol that is likely to, or treatment for which is likely to, impair your ability to control a heavy commercial vehicle. Find out more about what constitutes a reportable medical condition.
Applicants who currently hold an MR class driver's licence or who successfully complete a training unit through an authorised Registered Training Organisation RTO will not be required to take the heavy vehicle theory test.
Applicants not using a RTO and with a C class or LR class driver's licence will need to take the theory test, which consists of 10 questions, of which you must get 8 correct to pass. If you fail the PDA, you will need to retake the assessment after a minimum of seven calendar days.
There are no exemptions to this seven-day waiting period. This will allow you more time to improve your practical driving skills and therefore achieve the required driving standard.
Once you have passed your PDA, your licence record will be updated to show that you are now authorised to drive Heavy Rigid HR class heavy vehicles. A new driver's licence card will only be issued when you renew your current licence.
You may wish to order a replacement licence that will reflect your updated vehicle class. Fees will apply. Until you have presented your Statement of Attainment, Eye Test form and Certificate of Competency at a DVS centre and your licence record has been endorsed with the new class you will not be entitled to drive a vehicle of class HR.
A processing fee is charged by DoT to endorse your licence record. If you have a licence with a restriction to automatic transmission and you complete the PDA in a vehicle of a higher class fitted with a manual transmission, the restriction to automatic will be removed and only the higher class will show on your licence. A synchromesh transmission is a type of manual gearbox found in modern cars and trucks which uses synchronising collars to aid the driver in making smooth gear changes.
A non-synchromesh transmission such as a ranger or crash box does not use these collars, and timing of a gear change has to be done manually by the driver usually using a double de-clutch technique. If you complete the PDA in a heavy vehicle of a higher class fitted with a non-synchromesh transmission you can drive vehicles except motorcycles fitted with automatic or manual gearboxes of either type.
To remove any automatic restriction from a motorcycle R-E or R class you would need to pass a practical driving assessment on a motorcycle fitted with a manual transmission. Multi Combination MC class driver training and assessment are fully outsourced to the private sector. RTOs are to use windscreen-mounted and body-worn cameras to record the driving assessment which incorporates video, audio and GPS of the process.
The recording of driving assessments emphasises and enhances our commitment to road safety, excellent customer service and robust compliance strategies for contracted heavy vehicle driving assessments. The recording taken during the assessment may be viewed later or live at the actual time of the assessment by authorised officers in DoT.
The RTO will ask for your signature to acknowledge that you are aware your heavy vehicle PDA will be recorded on camera. If you do not wish to have your heavy vehicle PDA recorded on camera, your assessment cannot be conducted with an RTO and you will be referred to our Governance and Intelligence area to consider your individual circumstances. Further, there are personal vehicles that require a HR license, such as RVs, caravans, Winnebago, and allows you to hire larger vehicles for group travel.
Your license is recognised nationwide, so this opens up job prospects interstate. At the Miro Training Centre, we run both day courses as well as 2-hour lessons.
We have a number of assessors here and can service your assessment needs in house.
