Double click on the presentation you'd like to save as a template or select it and click Create New. Type the name you'd like to use for the template in the File Name box and select Design Template in the Save as type menu as seen below. Templates are saved with a. Slide Masters are where the style and design elements in a template are stored.

They are sometimes thought of as "hidden" slides. That is, the master contains all of the elements you want to appear on every slide that the master is applied to, but the master itself will not be visible during your presentation.

Any changes you make to a master are reflected in any slide to which that master has been applied. Using masters makes it quick and easy to change design elements across a series of slides. For instance, you may want to put a logo in the lower left hand corner of each slide. Instead of the time-consuming task of doing this one slide at a time, you can simply add it to the slide master.

Elements such as the footprint picture above cannot be deleted, moved, or manipulated on the individual slides, only on the slide master. A slide master task pane will open to the left of your presentation. This pane contains all of the master slides in the document. Select a master to edit it. You can edit a master the same way you edit an ordinary slide, just remember that any change you make to it will also appear in each slide that it's applied to. You can change the background color, add or remove elements, change font styles, etc.

The slide master view toolbar will also open. This is a floating toolbar that looks like this:. From the toolbar you can add new slide masters and title masters, remove them, rename them, or preserve them.

When you preserve a master you prevent it from being automatically deleted. PowerPoint does this sometimes when you delete all the slides that follow the master or apply another design template to all of the following slides. To keep this from happening, select a slide and click the Preserve Master button in the toolbar.

Just remember that you can still manually delete a master that has been preserved. The master layout button in the toolbar shows you all the placeholders that appear on the master.

When you click this button, a menu appears that looks like this:. Title masters are like slide masters except they contain all the design elements related to title slides, such as the size and positions of placeholders, color schemes, and backgrounds. In the Save as type list, click PowerPoint Template. Then click My templates. In the New Presentation dialog box, select the template you saved, and click OK. When you create a template, add any content to the slide master in Slide Master view that you want to protect from being changed by users of your template, such as instructional prompt text, logos, header and footer information, subject matter content, a background, formatting, colors, fonts, and effects.

Users of your template will work in Normal view, guided by the instructional prompts that you added. The template users will replace the instructional prompt text and other placeholder content with data that is specific to their own project or presentation.

In the slide thumbnail pane, the slide master represents the larger slide image, and the associated layouts are positioned beneath it. Many presentations contain more than one slide master, so you may have to scroll to find the one that you want.

To remove any of the built-in slide layouts that accompany the default slide master, in the slide thumbnail pane, right-click each slide layout that you don't want to use, and then click Delete Layout.

To remove an unwanted, default placeholder, in the slide thumbnail pane, click the slide layout that contains the placeholder, click the border of the placeholder in the presentation window, and then press DELETE. To add a text placeholder, in the slide thumbnail pane, click the slide layout that you want to contain the placeholder, and then do the following:.

To add other types of placeholders that contain content such as pictures, clip art, SmartArt graphics, charts, movies, sounds, and tables, on the Slide Master tab, in the Master Layout group, click the type of placeholder that you want to add. To apply a theme to include color, formatting, effects, in a layout to your presentation, on the Slide Master tab, in the Edit Theme group, click Themes , and then click a theme. To change the background, on the Slide Master tab, in the Background group, click Background Styles , and then click a background.

To set the page orientation for all of the slides in your presentation, on the Slide Master tab, in the Page Setup group, click Slide Orientation , and then click either Portrait or Landscape. To add text to appear in the footer at the bottom of all of the slides in your presentation, do the following:. In the Header and Footer dialog box, on the Slide tab, select the Footer check box, and then type the text that you want to appear at the bottom of your slides.

You can't create a template in PowerPoint for the web. You have to use a desktop version of PowerPoint instead. Design your slides. Create and save a PowerPoint template. To make changes to the slide master or slide layouts, on the Slide Master tab, do any of the following: To add a colorful theme with special fonts and effects, click Themes , and choose a theme from the gallery. To change the background, click Background Styles , and choose a background.

To add a placeholder to hold text, a picture, chart, video, sound, and other objects , in the thumbnail pane, select the slide layout that you want to hold the placeholder, and do the following: Click Insert Placeholder , and select the type of placeholder you want to add.

On the slide master or slide layout, click and drag to draw the placeholder size. Select Save. New, click Custom and then Custom Office Templates. If you make the slide under 10 times, it may not be worth clogging up your Slide Master area.

But if you use it frequently, creating a layout template for that type of slide will save you countless hours. Keep in mind that the blank layout and other blank variations can always be used to create more one-off slides. Creating a Custom Agenda Slide.

Note: You can change the shape of a placeholder, along with all other properties of a typical shape. That means that you can also add fill, outline, effects, etc. Note: You can perform these steps for all custom Child Slides. You can also create custom layouts for a lot of slides such as sport slides, case studies, contact us, etc. There are also other slides in the template such as the content slide with subtitles, a blank slide with a title.

You can format them per your requirements. They are not very different from one another, however, the only different ones are the title slide and the divider slide. The first thing is to set the animations and transitions for your slides. For all placeholders that you want to automatically animate in your template, simply select it and apply your animation. These masters determine the look and feel of your PowerPoint handouts when you print them.

Crop to aspect ratio. To do that, simply: Select the background image you have pasted on the slide Navigate to the Format tab. Open the Crop dropdown. Open the Aspect Ratio options. Choose your aspect ratio. In the picture above I chose for widescreen to match my slide dimensions another common aspect ratio is for printed slides. Adjust your photo within the frame. Hit the Crop command again or hit Esc on your keyboard. This will make resizing the image to fit your template much easier without having to worry about warping the image.

Fill out your slide background. To make the image fit your entire slide space, there are two options. You can alternatively resize your image as such:. Create a semi-transparent gradient layer. Step 1: Insert and format a rectangle. Draw in the rectangle so that it covers your entire background image for this to work, your rectangle needs to be the same exact size as the image you want to make transparent. Remove its outline by going to the Shape Outline dropdown and selecting No Outline.

Step 2: Add a gradient fill. With the rectangle still selected, make the following adjustments: Select your Rectangle and click Format Shape to open the Format Shape dialog box. Opening the Format Shape dialog box gives you a wide variety of formatting options you can use to format your shape backgrounds for your template.

Select the Gradient fill. In the Type dropdown, select Radial. In the Gradient stops bar, select the first gradient stop, and from the fill Color dropdown, select white. Next, select the second gradient bar and drag it to the right.

From the fill Color dropdown, select white. Then, select the third gradient bar and drag it to the right. Finally, select the last gradient bar and drag it to the right. Add a slide background design element. To do that, simply: Navigate to the Insert tab and select the Shapes dropdown. Select a Rectangle and draw it on the right-hand side of your slide. Make sure to place it on the edge of your slide. Add and edit your guides. In PowerPoint, guides help with formatting, positioning, and slide-to-slide consistency.

Notice that there are two guides: one vertical and one horizontal. To move a guide, place your mouse over it, and when your cursor becomes a double-headed arrow, drag the guide to where you want it on your slide. We will look at adding more guides in part 2 of this series. Part 2. Setting up your template placeholders and footers. Format the Title placeholder. Change the font size.

In the Font Size dialog box, enter 40 or whatever size you want. Resize and position the placeholder. To do that, simply select the placeholder and: Use the four-headed arrow cursor to move the placeholder to where you want it on your slide. With the placeholder still selected, drag the resizing handles the 8 little white circles in or out to resize the placeholder.

Set your vertical text alignment. Next, set the vertical text alignment for your title. To do that: Select your title placeholder. From the Home tab, select the Align Text dropdown menu. Align your guides to your title.

Drag your Horizontal Guides to match the top and the bottom of your title placeholder add more guides if necessary. Drag your Vertical Guides to match the left and right-hand sides of the title placeholder add more guides if necessary. Format the Text placeholder. Resize and position the Text placeholder. To do that: Select the Text placeholder and when the cursor becomes a four-headed arrow, drag the placeholder to the top and left side so that it is aligned with the Title placeholder.

Align the guides. To do that: Drag the horizontal guides to match the top and the bottom of the Text placeholder. Similarly, drag the vertical guides to match the left and right-hand sides of the Text placeholder. Adjust and align the bullet points.
