A story of a young Norwegian girl who lives in poverty with her mother and step-father on a small island just off the coast. We know from the first paragraph that she is being sexually abused by her step-father. The author spares us details of the abuse but catalogs her terror and the ways she deals with it. Her father is an on-and-off day laborer who spends most of his time drinking.
If her mother is not home, the girl lives in terror of his tread on the stars, his key in the lock. Will he fall asleep in a drunken stupor or will he come to her room? If he falls asleep, she fears his every stirring. And at one point her world collapses when her mother is forced to work night shift, leaving her at the mercy of her step-father every night.
Even silence is threatening to her. In response to the abuse she tries to make herself invisible. When she can she hides out in a warehouse attic owned by her uncle.
She comes to feel her body is dirty. During the abuse she shuts her mind down and feels her body fly out the window. She never tells anyone of the abuse, partly because she knows how desperately her mother needs the little money her father brings in to the family. We read details of how people live their daily lives; what they eat; how they run credit at the food store; even how they share outhouses. They live in a former mansion subdivided into crowded dumpy apartments called the Tenement. The women in the tenement work in the fish plant or as maids.
The family upstairs with a lot of kids is short one pair of shoes, so each day one child stays home from school. Because of their poverty the girl feels ashamed as she outgrows her clothes, causing expense for her mother. A feminist theme runs through the book in several ways. The aunt has her own money, pays herself for housework, travels and gives people gifts. The theme also shows in discussions among the women in the fish plant about their pay compared to men.
The women are on low-paid piece-work gutting fish. The men are not only higher paid but also salaried, so that they can laze around the factory when no boats are in to unload, whereas the women are sent home with no further pay as soon as the all the fish are cleaned.
This is an early feminist work by this award-winning author. This was the first book in what became a trilogy about this young girl named Tora.
